The MASL counts many fine musicians among its members.
Here are some of our better-known members past and present.
Mel Bay
Melbourne E. Bay was born and raised in
Missouri. He joined Local 2 in 1940. In 1995 Mel received his Gold Card as a Life Member of the Local. In 1997 he received the Owen Miller Award in recognition of his loyalty, dedication, fellowship and fairness towards this Local and its members. He followed this philosophy as a guitarist when working with other musicians, and as a music teacher, composer, publisher and music publisher. His Modern Guitar Method has sold over 20 million copies. Also see Mel Bay Publications on Wikipedia.
Owen Miller
This Saint Louisan was truly a pioneer in protecting the rights of musicians. Starting in early 1886, he saw the need of musicians to organize. Through his efforts, dedication and help of others, he was able to realize his dream of a musicians union in
Saint Louis. He served as the president of this Local from 1903-1911.
The union he helped organize became affiliated with the National League of Musicians, and he served as a vice-president with that organization. After a decade of contention between the League and a competing organization, the American Federation of Musicians, the latter was granted a charter by the American Federation of Labor (later, the AFL-CIO). Mr. Miller was the first President of the American Federation of Musicians, serving from 1896 to 1900, and he also served as the Secretary of the AFM, most notably during 1912 to 1914. He died in
St Louis in 1919.
George Smith
George Smith joined Local 197 of the American Federation of Musicians in 1938 and was President of that local when Locals 2 and 197 merged in 1971. As President of Local 197, he played a significant role in the merger. George served as a delegate to the AFM convention and to the AFL-CIO. A man of honor and integrity, he has always been an outstanding member of our organization. A member for more than 60 years, in 2008 George celebrated his 20th year as a life member. We are deeply indebted to George for the many ways he has assisted the Musicians Association of Saint Louis.
